Frequently Asked Questions
100% Organic Growing Cotton
Organic cotton is the purest form of cotton, grown without toxins, synthetic pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, or GMO’s (genetically modified organisms). Organic cotton farmers have developed creative ways to grow cotton without these chemicals. This is accomplished by the use of natural fertilizers, beneficial insects, and innovative weeding techniques.
In crib mattresses, organic cotton is a healthier alternative to foams (which are chemically treated) and latex (which is allergy-prone). All Naturepedic organic cotton mattresses feature 100% U.S. grown cotton and provide a healthy and comfortable sleep environment.
The organic cotton filling used by Naturepedic is certified by the Texas Department of Agriculture. The certification standard includes:
- NO synthetic pesticides
- NO synthetic fertilizers
- NO genetically modified organisms
- NO carcinogenic, mutagenic, teratogenic chemicals
- NO endocrine disruptors
- NO non-biodegradable detergents, degreasers, or surfactants
- NO chlorine bleach
- NO plastisols
- NO other synthetic chemicals
What makes the Naturepedic baby crib mattress so special?
In addition to organic cotton, Naturepedic mattresses provide important benefits including a non-toxic food grade waterproof / dust mite proof surface and an extra firm innerspring, all while avoiding the use of potential allergens such as latex and wool.
What is an organic baby crib mattress?
The word “organic” is a term regulated by the USDA applying only to agricultural products. For example, organic cotton is a crop that is grown in compliance with organic standards. This means that no synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers are used. An organic baby crib mattress is a mattress designed and constructed with certified organic materials, such as organic cotton, and which specifically eliminates potentially harmful synthetic materials such as vinyl/PVC and polyurethane foam.
Why would I want an organic baby crib mattress?
An organic baby crib mattress provides a healthier and more chemical free sleeping environment for your child. This means less exposure to potentially harmful chemicals.
What’s the difference between natural and organic cotton?
Natural cotton is grown conventionally but is not processed with harsh chemicals (such as chlorine bleach and various dyes). Organic cotton is not only unbleached and undyed, but is also grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers. It provides a completely natural and chemical-free filling material.
Do I need a mattress pad with a waterproof mattress?
Mattress pads are always a good idea. Firstly, no one wants to clean a mattress in the middle of the night. Secondly, they add a nice layer of breathability under the baby. Using DrySleep™ technology, the No-Compromise™ Waterproof Pad provides full waterproof protection while maintaining a degree of breathability.
What is polyethylene and why do I want it?
Polyethylene is an environmentally friendly plastic that is used throughout the food packaging industry for its purity and non-toxic properties. The polyethylene surface of the No-Compromise Organic Baby Crib Mattress is specially formulated using only pure food grade materials, creating the ultimate non-toxic and waterproof mattress cover. It is also easy to clean and will not stain.
What is FlameBreaker™ and why do I want it?
When it comes to bedroom fires, a moment or two can mean the difference between life and death. FlameBreaker is a non-toxic and naturally derived fire barrier system that is safe and effective. It meets and exceeds all Federal and State flammability standards without the use of potentially harmful chemicals.
Can our wool bedding be machine washed?
Yes. All of our wool bedding can be machine washed using specific parts of your machine's washing cycle. We provide detailed washing instructions with your product. You will need a machine that allows you to change the settings once it has already begun. Many of the new front loader machines will not work because they do not let you manipulate the cycle once it has begun. If you only have a front loader, your best bet is to find a good friend and use theirs. If you do not follow the instructions correctly, your bedding will turn into felt!
Do you carry other types of such as cotton or down?
No. While there are many types of "natural" materials used in natural bedding, we find wool to be the best. It ranks far above all other products (including cotton and down bedding) in it's ability to resist dust mites. Even products that are labeled "hypoallergenic" (including down products that have undergone massive wash techniques to get rid of the dust and even synthetic hypo products) will not be able to be dust mite free for long. Once you take it home, it will naturally attract dust mites.
Now let's examine the ecological footprint of wool. There is a great difference between domestic wool and wool that is imported. Many of the larger natural bedding companies use wool that has come from New Zealand and Australia. This outsourcing has depressed the sheep farming community for years due to cheap importing of foreign wool. Where you spend your money makes a difference- so be sure to buy bedding made with domestic wool. Our company uses wool that comes from our local Pacific Northwest bio-region. Another factor that makes wool the best is proces in which wool is taken from the animal. Down bedding comes from the meat industy. The bird is used for it's meat while the feathers are plucked for bedding. Sheep however, are not harmed in the process of shearing and they grow a coat of fleece annually.
Lastly, we find wool to be superior in it's cozy quality and it's ability to regulate your body temperature. There is just something about wool that has people fall in love with it.

How to Choose the Right Pillow...It's important for proper neck support to choose the right pillow thickness.
Bed Pillow LIGHT: Recommended for people who sleep on their stomach.
Bed Pillow REGULAR: Recommended for people who sleep on their sides or back.
Bed Pillow EXTRA: Recommended for people who sleep on their sides or back.

How much warmth do I need?
To choose the proper temperature weight in a comforter, consider the following:
o What is your typical body temperature?
o Do you find yourself to be generally cold or warm?
o Do you tend to get cold at night or overheat?
o If you sleep with another person you will generate more heat than you would by yourself.
o Assess the bedding you already have at home. Do you want to rely on your comforter by itself to keep you warm or will you be using it in combination with other blankets?
Cool Comfort - This temperature weight is best suited for: a hot natured person, partner sleeping, or to be used in combination with other favorite blankets.
Perfect Comfort - This is a standard wool weight comforter suited for single or partner sleeping, or can used in combination with other favorite blankets if needed.
Extra Warmth - This temperature weight is best suited for those who tend to get cold. Great for people who sleep by themselves and tend to like a lot of covers.
Natural wool is a traditional fill, used in bedding throughout the ages. Our grandmothers knew the many benefits that wool provides.
o Wool resists bacteria.
o Wool is fire resistant.
o Wool is cool in the summer yet warm in the winter.
o Unlike bedding that uses plucked down feathers, a sheep grows a coat of wool annually and is not harmed during sheering.
o Wool surpasses synthetic fill in terms of quality and durability.
o Unlike down bedding which shifts over time (ie. bare spots in a comforter), wool stays in place.
o Wool is a sustainable product helping small farmers make a living.
o With proper care your woolen bedding can last for decades.
Why Organic Cotton?
Did you know that approximately 1.25 lbs. of agricultural chemicals were used in growing the cotton in a single set of queen size sheets?
In fact, cotton crops are the second largest user of agricultural pesticides in the world (coffee is the first and tobacco the third). 25% of the world's insecticides and more than 10% of the world's pesticides are used on cotton. The worst part is not all of those pesticides stay on the cotton fields. It is estimated that only 25% of pesticides sprayed from a crop duster actually hit the crop. The remainder drifts for miles and lands on other food crops, residential areas and water sources.
These pesticides are harmful. Four of the top nine pesticides used on cotton, (cyanide, dicofol, naled, propargite) are classified by the EPA as cancer-causing chemicals. According to a 1997 study by the International Labour Organization, "14% of all occupational injuries in the agricultural sector, and 10% of all fatal injuries can be attributed to pesticides." Not to mention, in the food we eat, there are 71 known carcinogenic pesticides sprayed on food crops.
Pesticides don't just hurt humans. For example, in 1995 approximately 250,000 fish were killed in Lawrence, Alabama, when heavy rains washed lethal concentrations of methyl parathion and endosulfan from cotton fields into a 16-mile stretch of a creek that emptied into a nearby lake (C. Cox, 1995, Cotton Spraying Kills Fish).
Ironically, pesticides do not help to grow better crops. Since 1945, total U.S. crop losses from insect damage have nearly doubled. During the same time insecticide use has increased tenfold.
In 1997, large apparel companies purchased 2.15 million pounds of organic cotton, which eliminated an estimated 43,000 pounds of pesticides and 485,190 pounds of synthetic nitrogen fertilizer (Organic Fiber Council).
When you buy organic cotton you are supporting a movement to end the use of deadly pesticides. Go organic!
